Binary Models Changing with Society

In class, we spent a significant amount of time discussing how the binary models are altered by conglomeration. Hot and cool had no change, the category "infotainment" was developed, news sources veered toward populist reporting, and content-distribution successfully merged (for companies such as Netflix). But, in addition, I think the models are also substantially effected by society, and the change of modern ideals over time.
For example, the increasing rate of time spent on screens-especially for teens- limits and takes the place of other tasks, such as homework. As companies that produce screen entertainment recognize this, they adapt, making the time-consuming screen activity more of a cool model. This strategically allows time for teens to multitask, without having to disengage with the screen completely, maintaining business for the entertainment companies.
Another example is content-distribution. Because Netflix, a long time distributing company, has access to all of the data that depicts which type of movie/show are most successful, they were able to produce and release their own productions based on that common interest, which became extremely popular. Stranger Things, House of Cards, and rom-coms such as The Kissing Booth have all turned out to be well-known "Netflix Originals."
These examples show not only how conglomeration alters the binary models, but also how they are changed by trends and popular opinions of the current generations who interact with them.

Challenges of a Good Journalist

One of the very first topics we discussed in class was what makes good journalism. More specifically, we talked about the elements and yardsticks, which are guidelines for journalists to follow in order to produce good journalism. One of these guidelines was outlining that for news to be effectively received and understood by an audience, it must be attention holding. Lets face it, not every newsworthy story is interesting. I'll be the first to admit that I would much rather read about a mysterious disappearance than what tax-bill was denied. Thats just part of human nature. My point here is that journalists have a much bigger job than a lot of people realize. It is very common for the most important news to be somewhat boring, and for the not so newsworthy content to be very engaging. This is where good journalism comes in. I am not saying that every story has to keep the reader on the edge of their seat, however, it is a large responsibility of the writer to hold attention long...

national identity

As we started to discuss how magazines developed a national identity for our country, Mr Miller also mentioned that prior to this time, the US was mainly recognized as a country with the adaptation of various aspects of other cultures. Our sense of identity is much more developed today than it was in the 1700s, however I do believe that our nation should still pride itself and recognize that we are made up of such a wide variety of cultures. This lesson reminded me of the current views upheld by our president and his followers, and the actions in effort to homogenize the citizen population. Many of his followers agree with motives to drive out those who worship, look, believe, or think differently. What these people don't realize is how much the diversity contributes to our economy, international reputation, and identity as a free country. The variety of ethnic, religious, and all other groups that have been able to maintain individuality as well as be a part of a shared culture is...

the power of music

Recently in class, we have talked a lot about the general origination, evolution, and dynamics of the music industry, and music as a mass communication device. Since entering high school, I have grown a strengthening relationship and appreciation for music. I have realized that music is a very powerful influencer of mood and attitude, almost regardless of the situation. After class on Tuesday, I realized how much our generation takes for granted the on-demand, and individualized facet of modern music. I started to think about why music is so powerful, and I came to the conclusion that music gives us a sense of place when we otherwise might feel lonely, because, as conveyed through the lyrics,  it lets us know that other people feel that way. To me, the most impactful music is relatable, and can influence my attitude in any circumstance. I have never come to a circumstance that has not been able to be aided or related to with some type of music, whether the purpose of it is to allow...
