Response to Desiree

When I read Desiree's blog entry regarding mass communication, I was thoroughly impressed. There was specifically one part that really stood out to me as not only interesting, but very insightful. The third paragraph clearly details a common misunderstanding pertaining to this concept-that the communication type is classified by how many people access, decode, and internalize the message. The truth is, the number of viewers is completely irrelevant when distinguishing a message as mass or group communication. "... it's not uncommon for an individual to misinterpret the message as mass communication equaling more viewers and group communication being equated to less viewers," she wrote. She is completely correct.
Simplifying it, mass communication is partly defined by the amount of people it has to potential to reach; not the amount of people it actually reaches.
This then got me thinking about potential, and what a powerful concept it really is. Potential is such a major part of growing, and it can relate to anything you do. If you have the capacity to develop into something amazing, you are already something amazing, just with room to improve. To relate this back to journalism, when starting a publication, it is not essential to have a large audience, or a large number of followers, etcetera, but rather to have the POTENTIAL to grow and develop into a successful news outlet. Challenges of a Good Journalist

One of the very first topics we discussed in class was what makes good journalism. More specifically, we talked about the elements and yardsticks, which are guidelines for journalists to follow in order to produce good journalism. One of these guidelines was outlining that for news to be effectively received and understood by an audience, it must be attention holding. Lets face it, not every newsworthy story is interesting. I'll be the first to admit that I would much rather read about a mysterious disappearance than what tax-bill was denied. Thats just part of human nature. national identity

As we started to discuss how magazines developed a national identity for our country, Mr Miller also mentioned that prior to this time, the US was mainly recognized as a country with the adaptation of various aspects of other cultures. Our sense of identity is much more developed today than it was in the 1700s, however I do believe that our nation should still pride itself and recognize that we are made up of such a wide variety of cultures. This lesson reminded me of the current views upheld by our president and his followers, and the actions in effort to homogenize the citizen population. Many of his followers agree with motives to drive out those who worship, look, believe, or think differently. What these people don't realize is how much the diversity contributes to our economy, international reputation, and identity as a free country. the power of music

Recently in class, we have talked a lot about the general origination, evolution, and dynamics of the music industry, and music as a mass communication device. Since entering high school, I have grown a strengthening relationship and appreciation for music. I have realized that music is a very powerful influencer of mood and attitude, almost regardless of the situation. After class on Tuesday, I realized how much our generation takes for granted the on-demand, and individualized facet of modern music. I started to think about why music is so powerful, and I came to the conclusion that music gives us a sense of place when we otherwise might feel lonely, because, as conveyed through the lyrics,  it lets us know that other people feel that way. To me, the most impactful music is relatable, and can influence my attitude in any circumstance.
